The Seehund
(=Seal) - Picture by Jochen Sachse
|
| During
WW II the German Navy constructed also a very small submarine, designed
for two crewmembers: the type XXVII-b. The cover name of this boat
was 'Seehund' (=seal). Its technical equipment was nearly
the same as that of bigger boats - only smaller and more simple. You
may see such a boat in Munich's technical museum Deutsches
Museum. |

Most
of the 'Seehund' survivors joined the Verband der Seehundfahrer
- the association of SEAL-Sailors
Their speaker is
Klaus
Mattes.

Klaus
Mattes
wrote
this interesting book about the technical matters and the operations
of the German mini-submarine type SEEHUND, that means 'seal'.
Klaus Mattes looked for and found the necessary documentation
in German, British, Netherlands and American archives. He also analyzed
reports of witnesses and looked for further material in museums,
institutions and associations.
The book was published by:
Verlag E.S. Mittler & Sohn GmbH
Hamburg - Berlin - Bonn
ISBN 3-8702-0484-7
Klaus
Mattes is still looking for someone who translates his book in English!

Klaus Mattes
reports about a German midget submarine of the former Kriegsmarine,
which has been brought to its probably final berthing in the Museum
of Coastal Defence, the so called 'Fort aan den Hoek van Holland'
in The Netherlands in April 2003.

There is
also an interesting
report, written by the former Seehund sailor Hellmuth Bahlmann,
who is no member of the above mentioned association. The report
is available only in German. Sorry!
Please have
also a look at the English
Part about Seehunde, where we publish very interesting reports
and photos about Seehund, Biber and Molch - provided by Peter WIHTOL,
USS Salem Museum, Quincy, Mass., USA.
